Singing Lesson Basics

Singing Lessons BasicsSinging involves more than making different sounds into a microphone or otherwise.  When caring for an instrument, proper cleaning, tuning, and practice is required and your voice is no exception.  As such, proper care and best practices are essential to a student’s singing potential.

Upbeat Piano Studio offers singing lessons that provide our students with much more than the ability to control their voice.  Our one-on-one training sessions are tailored to help you continually progress and achieve your singing goals.  Each lesson covers a wide range of skill development including:

Posture and Breathing

Maintaining correct posture when singing enables you to increase breath capacity which helps create the largest space possible in your chest cavity, allowing your lungs to fully expand.  This ultimately allows more air into your lungs and provides the ability to sing longer phrases.  It also helps release tension in your jaw, which often occurs when singing higher notes.

Many singers who do not practice proper breathing technique or posture have a tendency to sing from their throat when they should be singing from their diaphragm.  Without engaging your diaphragm, air control becomes more difficult and in turn makes it harder to sing properly.  Like correct posture, using the right breathing techniques are crucial as it encourages the body to relax leading to more natural singing while allowing air to flow freely through your vocal chords.

Ear Training

Music is an auditory skill requiring both the ability to interpret sounds you take in and project sounds from your instrument of choice.  Proper ear training provides a singer with a toolset of not just a more confident singing voice, but also more in-tune listening.  We provide essential ear training to improve your pitch, your ability to stick to your piece, sight-singing, and more.

Being able to sing in tune depends on clearly hearing the pitch of each note you sing while also matching each note you hear around you.  This also provides the skill to differentiate between your singing parts and other parts of the arrangement to help you stay on key.  Additionally, ear training provides the ability to look at a piece of sheet music and match your voice to the key of the song.

Scales

Scales are a series of notes that rise and fall in pitch in a specific pattern.  Use the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” as an example; taking that first phrase of notes and repeating that pattern is a scale.  By altering the pattern or order in which the notes are played provides a different scale.  Knowing the correct scales in music and being able to match them vocally is important! Though this may be obvious to some the truth is many singers don’t practice, warm up to, or even take the time to learn scales.  Learning and practicing scales regularly helps keep your voice fine-tuned and in good shape.  With this brings vocal control, enunciation, emphasis, timing, and more.

There are many other areas of singing that our lessons provide to our students through the instruction of caring, qualified professionals.  Our goal is to help you reach the highest potential in your passion for singing.  Our teachers are experienced and passionate in helping students to improve their sound and their confidence. We teach using a step-by-step approach that is both centered on the goal of complete musicianship and building the morale and confidence of our students in their own musical ability.

Whether you are singing in a choir or the shower, wanting to show off on karaoke night or auditioning for musical theatre roles, even just for the pure love of singing, we will work with you to achieve your goals.
